Is a bone replacement graft really necessary?

How is it going? I was walking through the mall today and I thought of a good tongue scraper question. Well, here it is. I think you will find it helpful.
The dentist I visited today recommended a bone replacement graft as an option for after I get my top two wisdom teeth removed. Since this is costly and not covered by insurance, will I be able to get by without having it done?
It seems there’s been a lot of trolling on Yahoo Answers lately, but to clarify-
I have insurance, it covers wisdom tooth extraction, but not a bone replacement graft, which the dentist recommended because it “will heal better and not leave a huge recessed area” where the tooth once was.
Seeing as they are wisdom teeth in question, no one is going to see that area of my mouth, so I don’t care if there is a recessed area. I only want to know if doing the bone graft is really a necessary procedure, or if someone who opts not to get it will do just fine without.
Very interesting. Sometimes questions can be helpful, and sometimes they create even more questions. This one created more.
Have a happy day!

Did you ask him why is that necessary? that is not the normal procedure after removing wisdom teeth (and I’ve had all 4 done at the same time during surgery).
I do not believe that any hospital can turn you away in an emergency – say you are in terrible pain. They bill you later. Sometimes you can make a payment arrangement (monthly payments)
Try a dentistry school. The students are supervised by qualified staff.
General caring for teeth:

- Floss Buddy Kit – If you have difficulty flossing-:
An easy way to get patients to floss other than using Flosser Piks™ is maxill’s Floss Buddy Kit™ that comes with the easy to use wand and 12 metre E-Z Slide Floss™.
* Narrow floss bridge to best access cavity prone back teeth

- A Sonic electric toothbrush
This cleaning action is founded on the intense speed at which the bristles of the sonic toothbrush vibrate. This vibratory motion is able to impart energy to the fluids that surround teeth (such as saliva). The motion of these agitated fluids is capable of dislodging dental plaque, even beyond where the bristles of the toothbrush actually touch. Only a sonic toothbrush can make this claim.
- Vicco Ayurvedic Toothpaste or ARM & HAMMER PeroxiCare toothpaste
- ACT Fluoride Rinse for Kids or ACT Restoring Mouthwash (adults)
2. Tips
- Floss before brushing.
- Use an electric toothbrush (e.g. Sonic) OR a good medium bristle toothbrush (Colgate 360); brush top teeth down & lower teeth up.
- Brush inside surfaces of teeth same way
- Brush along the flat chewing/ biting surfaces
- Pass brush between gum & cheek also massage gums all over
- Brush tongue
- Toilet lid should be closed when flushing and when not in use.
- Toothbrush should be covered and stored at least 4 feet away from toilet
- Look at your toothbrush from behind. When you can see bristles sticking out the sides it’s time to get a new one.
3. Avoid anything that can scratch/ damage your enamel.
Check the Arm & Hammer site -.lots of stuff. The baking soda in their toothpaste is dental grade.
Avoid candy that remains in the mouth long (lolly pops, sweets etc). The sugar turns into acid which attacks the enamel. So with sweets that you suck, the acid stays around longer to do more damage. On the other hand cake & ice-cream for example, are quickly swallowed – generally no problem.
